Nach einem Studium in Orgel und Cembalo an der University of Auckland bei Anthony Jennings vervollkommnete James Tibbles seine Ausbildung am Königlichen Konservatorium in Den Haag bei Bob van Asperen. Gleichzeitig studierte er dort historische Orgeln und das Hammerklavier. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Neuseeland im Jahre 1985 wurde er Musikdirektor der Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland; eine Position, die er bis 1993 innehatte. Seit er 1999 in den Lehrkörper der University of Auckland berufen wurde, war er sowohl interimistischer Rektor als auch Rektor der School of Music. Derzeit ist er Vizerektor für Lehre sowie Leiter der Abteilung Alte Musik und unterrichtet Alte Musik und historische Aufführungspraxis. Zahlreiche Absolventen der Abteilung sind als Musiker in Europa aktiv. James Tibbles’ Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf Aspekten der Bachschen Werke für Tasteninstrumente sowie auf der Geschichte der Alten Musik in Neuseeland sowie den historischen Orgeln des Landes.

After completing a Masters degree in Organ and Harpsichord under the late Anthony Jennings at The University of Auckland, James Tibbles undertook post-graduate study at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague under Bob van Asperen, as well as pursuing studies on historic organ and fortepiano. On his return to New Zealand in 1985 he was appointed Director of Music at Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity - a position he held until 1993. Since being appointed to the staff of The University of Auckland in 1999, James has held the positions of Deputy Head and later Head of School. He is currently Associate Head, Performance, Senior Lecturer in Early Music Performance / Performance Practice and Head of the Early Music Department (which has in recent years produced a number of graduates who are active as professional Early Music performers in Europe). James' research interests include the history of Early Music in New Zealand, early New Zealand organs, and aspects of the performance of Bach’s keyboard works.
